PLAY THERAPY SREIES
EMH's "Play Therapy" is a series of 6 double-sided artworks which are repurposed papers initially started by pre-adolescent students than finished by EMH Artists. The students started drawings during playtime and quickly"became bored" before abandoning the pieces, however they agreed to let EMH artists paint on top of them, while not completely covering up all of the their work, creating a true multi-generational collaboration. In the spirit of repurposing and Zero Waste, original EMH works were created on the flip side, so it's 2 paintings on 1 paper!
Titled: "Play Therapy #1"
About the Piece: The Front work started as one student depicting a fight they got into playing soccer during recess. EMH loves hombres, symbolic to the artists of change and transition, and added a semi-transparent Purple to Green hombre, but with some original soccer players still visible, appearing as if they’re floating in another galaxy.
The Back piece is representative of a triumphant moment in the artists lives. Spring 2025 brought adversity, uneasiness, and confrontation at every level, where finding satisfaction within their own lives seem difficult. This piece has approximately 10 different layers, many of which the artists were not originally satisfied with until the layer, brown (fabric paint applied with a spatula), was applied. Upon completion of a spontaneous decision to use fabric paint like acrylic (just to use it up and not throw it away initially) the image appeared to the artists as a stairway or ladder, symbolic of progress and moving forward. Finding satisfaction with their own work again, after so much trial, error, exploration, and dissatisfaction, it was a refreshing step forward.
