"Play Therapy #3"
PLAY THERAPY SERIES
EMH's "Play Therapy" is a series of 6 double-sided artworks which are repurposed papers initially started by pre-adolescent students than finished by EMH Artists. The students started drawings during playtime and quickly"became bored" before abandoning the pieces, however they agreed to let EMH artists paint on top of them, while not completely covering up all of the their work, creating a true multi-generational collaboration. In the spirit of repurposing and Zero Waste, original EMH works were created on the flip side, so it's 2 paintings on 1 paper!
Titled: "Play Therapy #3"
About the Work: The Front Piece started as a project by a particularly happy but hyperactive student who struggles with ADHD. Painting and sculpting are 2 of their favorite activities that help them engage and keep their focus because they’re so into it. Here they painted bright blue skies with pink clouds and an ocher color representing the sunlight (kids love painting nature). EMH than added an abstract landscape, first on top, than bottom, before connecting the 2 with spatula strokes to give the effect of seeing the beautiful day through a reflection in the water.
The Back Piece features a little birdie inspired mixed media collage. First EMH began by repurposing rip upped papers with colored backgrounds from old sketchbook paintings to create a mosaic like pattern, intricately crafted in a cohesive fashion. The result resonated with the feeling of an aquatic nest, which was than accentuated with collage created color coated birds, which are spiritually symbolic of freedom and transcendence. The artists use of their surroundings and creative ingenuity to work within their surroundings, rather than buy more supplies, is their way of expressing freedom and living a a karma-rich fulfilling life.
